Henderson's has been hailed by 'Scotland the Best' as a 'Scottish Pioneer', a groundbreaking business that changed the nation forever. The shop first opened in 1962, providing an outlet for the produce of Janet and Mac Henderson's East Lothian farm.
The legendary basement restaurant soon followed, and quickly became an Edinburgh institution. Since then Henderson's has acquired a bistro, a bakery, a deli, a gallery and an international reputation for cutting edge vegetarian cuisine while remaining true to the founding philosophy of serving delicious, wholesome food, using the best and freshest ingredients, and all at affordable prices.
Today, in its 52nd year, Henderson's remains as vibrant as ever. With its nightly programme of live music and laid-back atmosphere, set against the backdrop of the Janet and Mac Gallery, the restaurant is a cultural hub, popular with actors, writers and musicians.
The cosy and enticing Bistro is more tempting than ever now that it has launched its Afternoon Teas menu; the Shop continues to expand its range of carefully selected products; and in 2009 Henderson's became an official venue of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
